Landowner FAQs

Everything you need to know before leasing your land for renewable energy.

WattsWorth partners with landowners like you to unlock the income potential of underutilised land. We sign an option or lease agreement with you, conduct preliminary due diligence, and then promote your land to renewable energy developers (solar, wind or wind)

If a developer is interested, we sign a sub-lease with them — and that’s when rental payments to you begin.

Not immediately.

We only start rental payments once a renewable energy developer signs the sub-lease and moves ahead with the project. Until then, there is no income — but also no cost to you.

Great question.

Most developers won’t engage until land has already been scoped, vetted, and contract-ready. We do all of that for you — meaning your land is marketed professionally, and you do not have to deal with complex technical questions or lowball offers.

Also, we often work with multiple developers — giving your land broader exposure and a higher chance of being selected.

Nope. Zero. Zilch.

There are no costs to submit your land or to sign the initial option/lease with us. We only make money if your land gets sub-leased to a developer.

We are looking for:

  • Farmland or grazing land not being fully utilized (cropland not preferable) for solar and wind; land with access to water sources for hydro
  • Large open spaces with minimal slope for solar and wind; suitable water flow for hydro
  • Land near existing roads or power lines
  • Areas of 100 hectares or more (ideal for solar, larger for wind, or near water sources for hydro) Smaller parcels may still be considered if they can be aggregated with neighbouring properties to reach the required scale.

Even land currently being used for agriculture may qualify — depending on location and zoning.

In many cases — yes.

Solar developers often allow dual use, meaning you can graze livestock or grow certain crops between the panels. For wind farms, most of the land remains accessible. Hydro projects may limit farming, but we will let you know if your land qualifies for hybrid use.

We will let you know if your land qualifies for this kind of hybrid use.

Most renewable energy leases range from 10 to 30 years, depending on the project.

Some may include an initial option period (12–24 months) while the developer does further studies before construction starts.

Nothing changes.

You keep your land, and the option/lease agreement with us will expire after a defined period if no developer signs on. There is no penalty, no cost, and no obligations beyond that.

Yes.

We do not share your name, contact info, or exact location publicly or with developers until we have signed an agreement and you have approved it. We take privacy and professionalism seriously.

We get it — the market is full of fly-by-night promises.

WattsWorth works only with reputable developers, uses legal agreements vetted by industry experts, and makes no income claims until deals are actually signed.

You will always know where you stand — and you will never be asked to pay a cent upfront.

It varies.

Some sites are snapped up within weeks, others may take months depending on market demand, grid capacity, and developer interest in your region. That said, having a signed lease and due diligence completed gives your land a real head start.

Our agreements typically include clear exit clauses and an option period, not an immediate, full lease.

If you change your mind during the option window (before a developer signs), we will work with you to exit the process amicably.
